he Spice & Tea Exchange is celebrating a decade on St. Armands Circle, and if you have a sense of smell, you owe it to yourself to stop in.
The decor will remind you of an old-world trading post where the shelves are lined with big apothecary jars of spices and teas alongside all the accessories to use them. But you don’t have to see inside to know what this shop is about. You’ll pick that up when you open the door and catch the fragrance of teas and spices from around the world, salts, sugars along with inspired spice blends that are hand mixed on the premises.
If it’s a day when they’re mixing their proprietary, top-selling Florida Sunshine, the heady fragrance of citrus and spice will delight you.
“We actually purchase crates of oranges, lemons, and limes and peel and hydrate them in the store before turning them into zest for making the blend,” said owner Paulette Callendar.
Tuscany Blend — another customer favorite, this time with a Mediterranean palette — is made from garlic, tomato powder, lime frost sea salt, onion, salt, black pepper, olive oil, rosemary, basil, green and red bell peppers, parsley, crushed red pepper flakes, aji amarillo pepper, coriander, cumin, oregano, and thyme.
“It’s great with olive oil and bread or over pasta with parmesan,” Callendar said.
Walking through the shop, you’ll catch notes of cinnamon, clove, ginger, nutmeg, paprika, and peppers — in fact, pretty much every spice you can think of.
Visit the Tea Bar for a refreshing drink of exotic teas, including limited-time offerings, black, white, and green teas, herbal teas and more. Or stop in for one of The Spice & Tea Exchange’s many tastings — or just to browse.
